Assignment 12 - Finding a Career that Suits You (Optional Assignment)
Instructions: 1. Read over the following info: Post-Secondary Terms Certificate Certificate programs take between six and 12 months of full-time studies to complete. Diploma Diploma programs take two to three years of full-time studies to complete. Associate Degree An associate degree (AD) is a two-year program made up of 20 university transfer courses. Bachelor's Degree A bachelor's degree is a four-year degree. It's also called an undergraduate degree or a Baccalaureate degree. Advanced Diploma An advanced diploma builds on a previously completed diploma, or on at least five years of related work experience and is equivalent to a minimum of three months of full-time study beyond a diploma. Post-Degree Diploma A post-degree diploma builds on a previously completed recognized degree and is equivalent to two semesters of full-time, advanced-level studies. Master's Degree A Master's (or post-graduate) degree, is earned after completion of an undergraduate degree. Typically, the master's degree requires about 30 credits of coursework and takes 2 years of full time study beyond the bachelor's degree. In addition to coursework, the master's degree sometimes entails completing comprehensive exams and/or a thesis. Doctorate/PhD A Ph.D., typically completed after a Master's degree, demonstrates a person's competence in research and qualifies them to become professors. Doctoral studies offers a unique opportunity for an individual to conduct intensive and prolonged research (often over several years) on a very particular topic, which usually leads to publication. Doctoral degrees are commonly offered in the fields of medicine, dentistry, law, education, in addition to many other faculties of learning.
3. Dig around the websites of three colleges and/or universities that you might possibly attend. Which ones offer diplomas, certificates, associate degrees, etc.?Keep an open mind regarding careers and/or areas of study that you: A) never knew of (or much about) before B) never considered as a career option. Look beyond local post-secondary institutions like UVIC and Camosun. Branch out to schools like Kwantlen Polytechnical University, BCIT, and TRU. Consider looking at schools in other provinces, too.
Assignment: 1. Record three "possible career options" that you could consider. 2. Write a brief assessment/summary paragraph for each one that explains why you would consider it. Include the following information: a) the length of study and the cost of program b) the location of institution c) the career opportunities available to you upon completion of program d) why the program is a "good fit" for you. 3. List any prerequisites that you need to obtain before you can start the program. 4. Copy and paste the post-secondary institution link for each one. 5.
